Acanthus - A stylized leaf first used in classic Greek and Roman architecture and decoration. A characteristic of the Corinthian capital

Air-dried lumber - Lumber that was dried, usually outside, to equilibrium moisture content with the air it was exposed to.

Amboyna - An imported hardwood from the Dutch East Indies possessing a yellow - red color. Used chiefly as an inlay.

Anthemion - Decorative motif of Greek origin, the radiating pattern resembles the honeysuckle flower or palm leaf.

Annual growth rings - The layer of growth that a tree puts on in one year. The annual growth rings can be seen in the end grain of lumber.

Antique - A work of art, a piece of furniture, or any other decorative object which, according to United States law, must be at least 100 years old.

Apron - A board placed at right angles to the underside of a shelf, chair seat, or table top.

Arcading - Carved architectural ornament suggesting arches. Often-used on chair-backs and applied on panels.

Armoire - A movable wardrobe, usually with one or two doors, originating in the late 16th century France.

Art Deco - Period from 1925 to about 1935 when designers were influenced by simple geometric patterns.

Art Nouveau - Period from 1889 to 1925 associated with a curvilinear swing design. Inspired by plant and animal forms in nature and frequently incorporating the figure of a woman.
