Environmental Statement We recognize that as a wood furniture company and therefore as a consumer of a precious natural resource we have an obligation to act responsibly. Our Environmental Impact Policy is threefold:
The outer surfaces of our pieces are decorated with veneers from some spectacular species. Due to its extremely high yield, we believe that using veneer stock is by far the most conscientious method of processing and displaying these remarkable woods. Because exotic and semi-exotic woods are frequently native to less well-developed countries, their unique economic situation makes the resource management equation more complex. We believe that highlighting and promoting the use of veneer rather than solid stock creates the incentive to harvest much more judiciously. As the value of the existing standing stock processed as veneer increases and creates a disincentive to mill lower margin solid stock, the overall value of the harvest improves while the volume of lumber logged may decrease. We recognize, however, that this issue is not at all straightforward and that each source country has unique challenges. Thus far we have not used, nor is it our intent to use, solid-stock from exotic hardwoods. At present WILLEM SMITH supports two organizations. We have summarized their objectives and activities below.
The Hardwood Forestry Fund is a 501(c)(3) educational organization dedicated to establishing sustainable hardwood forests. Since 1990, Hardwood Forestry Fund members have joined together to celebrate and conserve the beauty and sustainability of hardwoods. Through tree planting on public land, the Hardwood Forestry Fund promotes hardwood timber growth, management, environmental education, and wise use of renewable forest resources. Trees planted by the Hardwood Forestry Fund require a management plan that ensures they will be cared for to provide quality natural resources for future generations. Educational and demonstration forests help teach school children and private landowners how to establish and be good stewards of hardwood forests. Earth Share, a nationwide network of respected environmental and conservation organizations, is dedicated to supporting the state, national and international organizations working to protect the environment and our well-being every day. Earth Share requires applicant organizations to meet 17 different criteria before they're considered for membership in the federation and then these groups must undergo annual reviews to ensure their continued adherence to the membership requirements. The strict eligibility criteria were established so donors could be sure Earth Share only represents outstanding charities that operate with the highest possible ethical and professional standards. We encourage you to research the groups we support and other organizations to learn more about the furniture industry’s impact on our natural resources and the important initiatives that are being undertaken to encourage and deliver improvements to our environment and our management thereof.
